How I do to intall updates?

BITS was not started so many automatically downloaded updates didn't install.
I started BITS, but when I return to Windows updates, the downloaded updates
still have failed to install. I've had problems with BITS before, but don't
recall what to do after I get it started. (Windows XP, SP2)

What do I need to do? (There are too many to install each one manually).
