How do I make a Service Pack 2 CD-R

I am going to write the Service Pack 2 to a CD-R. I have extracted it and
the top folder will be i386. I'm not sure if the name of the CD-R matters
how about WinXPSP2? But one thing I am trying to avoid is the sfc issue.

Using sfc in Windows 2000 I was asked to put my Windows 2000 SP3 CDROM in
the drive. I put the CDR in that I used.but it didn't work. Investigating
this issue at Microsoft the best I could come up with is that I used
update.exe to install the Serrvice Pack. I could find no other executable
in the Service Pack that was clearly going to update the system. But doing
this led to the sfc issue. I want to avoid that.

I'd like to put a Autrun in also. But I don't know the executable it should
call. Any ideas how to do this right? Thanks.

Why not order the CD, Step 1 on this link:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm

As far as SFC is concerned, if you are asked for your Windows XP SP-2 CD,
simply insert the Windows XP CD used to install Windows.
"C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles" will be accessed for the necessary files from
the SP-2 CD.
There is no reason to insert the Service Pack CD during SFC.
Some mistakenly believe ServicePackFiles are not necessary and delete them.
But when performing SFC, these are needed.
Perhaps someone deleted these on the computer you referenced with SFC
issues.

No that didn't happen. The CD-R I made with Windows 2000 SP3 just was not
recognized by SFC. Just wasn't. According to Microsoft this issues arises
because we install SP3 with the update.exe located in i386\update\update.exe
which is the only executable I can find in SP3 that "looks" like it will
update the system to SP3.

It was that I was trying to avoid. But it looks like this is unavoidable
whether a CDROM is obtained from Microsoft for an SP or not. At least that
is the way it is looking now. Here's my next thought on the matter.

Install Windows SP2 using update.exe
Slipstream SP2 into the Windows XP
Use that when queried for the installation CD during SFC.

What do you think? Will that work to avoid this SFC issue?

Of course there is one other way. And that is just put the SP2 on disk
install from there and set the regsitry appropriately. This is called a
Network install. I was hoping to avoid that.

A slipstreamed CD to the latest Service Pack and used for Clean Installation
is the best way.

I'm not doing a clean installation. I am using a Windows XP SP1
installation and trying to install SP2 and have a working SFC afterwards.
That is my goal. And really that goal should not be out of bounds. What
are we to reinstall new systems every time a Service Pack comes out? Who
does that?

I know this SFC issue doesn't always occur but it does happen as many here
can attest to. And it did in this system Windows 2000 SP3. I fixed it but
now I have to keep SP3 on disk.

George;
I know it occurs sometimes but not always.
The trick is to find out what variable causes it.
What do the computers experiencing the problem have in common?

On thing that causes problems is when people attempt to save space by
deleting "C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles" with the mistaken belief it is not
needed.

The closest you will get to a guarantee is a Clean Installation.
I myself never experienced problems with System File Checker.

I do know what the trouble is. Didn't I mention it?..."Investigating this
issue at Microsoft the best I could come up with is that I used update.exe
to install the Serrvice Pack." It comes from using update.exe in the
Network install. Yes other times it comes from removing the
ServicePackFiles folder. But that alone is not necessary to stop the issue
if using the Network install. In fact there is a Hotfix for this issue in
Windows 2000:

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;291594

Someone posted recently this very issue in Windows XP. And a MS employee
responded. His explanation was interesting.
