how do i make vista stop searching in "search results" and just se

How do i make Vista stop searching in "search results" and just search what I
asked for? I open Windows Explorer with the "windows" key + E, then I type my
search query into the box that says "search" in the top right side. On the
left side, the box says "computer." THAT IS WHERE I WANT IT TO DO THE SEARCH.
In the COMPUTER. In the entire computer, if that's what I designate. That's
all I'm trying to do, is to get the search to be executed in the directory I
designate, whether the entire C: drive or whatever subdirectory I choose.

But it does not do that! It always automatically jumps to something like
"searching in search results," and then it only looks for the answer in one
or two directories and naturally it can't find anything! It seems to be
jumping to "search results" from a previous search I did many hours ago for
something entirely different.

I even tried it out with search terms for files where I know exactly where
they are so I know it is impossible for there to be "no files found," if the
search would be done in the directory I am designating. But it is only
searching in "search results" so of course it does not find what I need.

I am so frustrated with this!! And it's impossible to find answers in the
computer's help section or online when you (= me) have no idea what the right
words or what the right questions structure is to ask the questions. It is
taking hours to accomplish the most simple task. It took me almost a day to
figure out how to make all the directories on the C: drive show up on the
left pane with the subdirectories and folders opening in the right pane, like
in the old style of Explorer. Why doesn't Microsoft give that option as
"classic view" or whatever, so whoever wants it can find it easily?

I would be so grateful if someone could explain how I can make Vista conduct
searches of the directories that I designate it to search in, and not
whatever it feels like searching. Many thanks.

FWIW, I am subscribed to automatic updates so the system is updated to
whatever is the latest Microsoft update as of today at 10:00 AM, whatever
that is.

Control Panel will access the search options, but my way is to type a letter
or so in that search box you reference, and go from there. "Organize" menu
has the options you can set, and the View" menu has a way to see the 'search
pane' after that, where you expose the 'double drop arrow' and set advanced
search to 'everywhere' and so on.

Thanks. I haven't tried through Control Panel, but I'll try your suggestions
and see if it helps. I'm far from being a pro or expert, but I have been
spending my working hours staring down one Microsoft OS after another ever
since the days of DOS, and none has proved as exasperating as this.

After about 6 weeks of wrestling, I'm getting very close to my frustration
threshold with Vista and this might send me over the edge into
downgrade-to-XP-land. Everyone I know who's gotten Vista machines did that
immediately, but I thought I'd give it a chance. It has proven worthy of its
awful reputation.

Thanks for trying to sort it out. I'll post back if it works in case others
might find it helpful.

Bring focus to the desktop, by clicking somewhere on it then press F3 (talk
to Google about having to do that awkward work-around instead of just having
a Search link like pre-SP1).

Under Search in the corner there will be an option for 'Advanced Search',
under there will be an option for Location, you can change it from the
Indexed locations, to specific drives etc.

I've seen search work using Windows Vista, but not on my Vista machine.
I've been looking for a way to get search to work in Vista on my machine
since last July. There is NO ONE at Microsoft that cares. And I've hassled
folks at Microsoft as high as a vice president, who now refuses to answer my
E-mails about the failure of Vista's search.

This blog entry was supposed to be about "Advanced search techniques" using
Vista, but it's now a chronology of the failures of Vista search.

Why does NO ONE at Microsoft care enough to fix Vista's search? Why does
search not work on my machine, but it works on others? How is that possible?

I am beyond FRUSTRATION with Microsoft on a failed Vista search, and on
failed technical support, and with their arrogance that they won't even try
to solve the Vista search problem.

Search didn't work (with Indexing enabled) on my Vista machine until the
day I installed SP1. I've no idea why it now works, but we have another
Vista machine in the house w/o SP1 and it still can't locate files with
Indexing enabled. With SP1, it works like a dream, leaving me in
shock that somehow it got fixed, but I heard not a peep anywhere about
it being fixed. I'll take what I can get, however!
