Do I need to download & install Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1

I am running a copy of Windows XP Pro x64 Edition obtained through the
Microsoft Technology Advancement Program. I called the UK support number to
ask the following simple question:

When running the Microsoft Update/Windows Update web page to update my PC,
the right hand side has the message 'See options for installing Windows
Server 2003 Service Pack 1'. Do I need to install it on my PC with this OS?
If you run System Properties the OS is described as Windows XP Pro x64
Version 2003 SP1. So I am confused about why I am being shown the update
information prompt.

I have followed the link and read the information contained but am none the
wiser.

A clear indication either way from an MVP would be greatly appreciated here
especially as the support operative would not help me as my OS has an OEM
product ID regardless of the fact I bought it from Microsoft through the
Technology Advancement Program (this means I am not entitled to telephone
support without paying apparently).

Thanks!

Disregard the "Version" and year in the descriptive part of your Windows. You have XP Pro-64 bit.
No, you do not want (or need) "Server 2003". What you saw was promo or news about a service pack for Windows Server.

As to display on webpage while at Windows Update, don't let it throw you off-track. The "right-hand" early display at Windows Update may have 2 boxes (at least on mine) drawn, which are purely for information only, such as the one that is titled "News".
(Perhaps the line you saw came up because you are running on a 64-bit machine. My guess.)

If you have not already, see your Windows version information as displayed by WINVER. (and again, if you have XP, disregard the year). Go to Start menu, select RUN. Type in
WINVER <tap-Enter>

Review the numbered & text shown for the version number.

Thanks your quick answer. The version info comes up with Version 5.2 (Build
3790.srv03_sp1_rtm.050324-1447 : Service Pack 1).

You are running Windows 2003 server with SP1 and not XP. It is very possible that the SP1 installed is the Beta version that was out before the RTM. When did you install that SP1?

The OS installation date for the entire OS was 1st August 2005. It is not the
Beta version of the OS and I have not installed any service packs on the
system since installing the OS, just updates released through Windows and
subsequently Microsoft Update. I have checked the update history for the PC
and Server 2003 SP1 is not listed as downloaded and installed through either.

The OS installation CD sent by Microsoft (obtained through the Microsoft
Technology Advancement Program) definitely says Windows XP Professional x64
Edition within the holographic design on the disc and on the printed sleeve.

I understand that the x64 version of Windows XP Pro is based on Server 2003
code (it says so during the installation routine), so maybe the OEM
installation CD I was sent contains Server 2003 SP1 code. A lot of the
drivers I have installed for hardware can be used on both (XP x64 only) and
Server 2003 systems.

Should I download the Service Pack currently available and try installing
it? I have a full backup of the system.

Regards

Mike

(Cross posting to microsoft.public.windows.64bit.general)

According to the WINVER display, your system already has Service Pack 1.

(Note: OP has XP-Pro x64)

SP1 is installed and is the most recent version of Windows XP Professional
x64 Edition. There are, of course, several post SP1 updates that you should
install.

Thanks to everyone for your information and guidance. I appreciate your help.

I have downloaded and installed all updates for the OS Since receiving and
installing it. There are still a couple of critical errors cropping up for
which I have sent error reports in. That was why I thought that I may need to
download the service pack as it may have helped to prevent them.

I am now clear that I do not have to, as Maurice N wrote in the 1st response
to my post.

Kind regards,

Mike
