Do I need to leave 8MB of unallocated space?

When you install windows and you set up your partitions, it always insists
on leaving at least 8MB of unallocated space. I can't remember its purpose
but I think it definitely had a function.

When I partition my drive in Vista Home Premium do I need to leave some
unallocated space in the same way? If so, how much?

Would you mind expanding on what you have said? What did the 8MB do for
XP?....and why does Vista not need that any more?
