Do I NEED to reinstall update KB905474

If I check for updates I keep getting prompted to install KB905474.

I attempted several times to install the update and each time it failed I
received the
Error - Error Code: 0x80242006. And again the scan will inform me I need
to install this update.
My Windows is GENUINE, and has been verified. On review of my update history
I found 2 others attempts by automatic updates to install the same update,
one was marked failed and the other marked cancelled. On further review I
then found a successful install of KB905474 ALREADY HAD BEEN DONE. Is there
a reason why it still wants me to install this update? Should I remove it and
reinstall??
Thanks in advance

To recover from this error, please download and install:

http://www.download.windowsupdate.co...d496154544.exe

Then re-boot Windows. Does this solve your problem?
This link is to a more recent version of the update than the one offered by
Windwos Update, and fixes the installation glitch which leads to 80242006.

Bcause it is offering a more up-to-date version of 905474 than the version
already in your system. When the 905474 software is updated, the KB number
does not change, but the revised version is offered for download and install
by Windows Update.

Yeah, I can hardly wait for the new "update" to the BETA WGA spyware
that comes out today. NOT.

Well I did the download. I ran the install wizard, then rebooted. I check my
add/remove programs and NO update...Went to M windows update to check history

Windows XP Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474)
Tuesday, June 13, 2006 Automatic Updates "CANCELLED".

Windows XP Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474)
Tuesday, June 13, 2006 Microsoft Update "FAILED".

Windows XP Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474)
Tuesday, June 13, 2006 Microsoft Update "FAILED"..........

Windows XP Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474)
Tuesday, June 13, 2006 Automatic Update "FAILED"

....I then ran the scan for updates and it NO longer prompts me to install
the update.
If it did NOT "install" the update, or so it says I didn't, then why is it
not prompting me to install the update as it did before?

It *did* install the update. It is normal for manually installed updates
not to appear in the History list of Windows Update.

Because it installed properly, Windows Update no longer offers the faulty
earlier version of this update.

....

The link repaired the problem for me, FWIW, though I had
different symptoms.
It wasn't that I couldn't install it, I couldn't even download
it. Soon as I clicked on it, I'd get the failure message, but no
error number of any kind. Finally, after farting around with the
useless "fixes" available for it, I came here and got this link.
Figuring it was worth a try, I could always back it out with
GoBack, I went ahead and installed it, restarted, went to windows
update, and voila; no more offering it to me to download. That's
good.

It's now a little past 3 PM EST: So, is that the LATEST one, or
is there another coming? This's the first time I had a problem
with it, so I assume it was yet another botched release, right?
I hope someone at MS's getting their netherparts well chewed for
the lack of Quality and reliability in this stuff. Good idean
going bad.

well i just called Microsoft to start screaming because this is the 5th
machine i have had reboot because of the genuine valadation tool
First thing I hear is "if you are having problems with the genuine
validation tool update please go to www.microsoft.com\genuine\diag"
Hmmm well this is all well and good because sure if you can get your machine
to run... you can use this. and it does work
And for those of us who can't well you are just out of luck arent you.
yeah I am really annoyed right now. fix the problem dont MAKE a fix for the
problem.
