Do I need the update KB901105-v3 when I get my new 64-bits musicpu

I am about to put together a new workstation based on 64-bits for
musicproduction. I have bought Windows XP PROFESSIONAL X64 Edition and I've
found 4 updates at Microsoft's Download Center that MIGHT be useful. But I'm
a bit unsure about 3 of them. The descriptions in Kb901105 say that it
resolves an issue in Windows-based systems
equipped with HD audio devices that prevents the HD Audio devices
from playing audio properly.
But the name of the file:
'WindowsServer2003.WindowsXP-KB901105-v3-x64-ENU.exe' indicates that this is
not for the PRO version I got.
Only one of the updates says that it's for the PRO version - 'Cumulative
Security Update for Internet Explorer for
Windows XP Professional x64-bit Edition (KB896727)'

Can anyone help me with this uncertainty?

Here's what I would suggest as a methodology....

First install the OS.

Second, go to Microsoft Update, let MU inventory what you need.

/Then/ using the list of updates you /need/, go to the KB articles and read
about them and determine whether you /want/ to install them or not.

No point in trying to do manually what the WUA is designed to do automatically
... for you.


For the record... /all/ Windows XP updates that I know of .. except /one/
pre-SP2 optional update .. have been applicable to both editions of XP -- Pro
and Home. The exception was an optional update for XP Home, and I still don't
know why it wasn't applicable to Pro.

I have no intension to link this musicputer to the internet. Don't want
firewalls and antivirus apps in it. The machine is entirely for musicmaking
and will be configured as such.
But your answer was good anyway. The specific update for the PRO version I
mentioned is probably not necessary for the HOME version. Apart from that the
updates are PROBABLY for both PRO and HOME versions, meaning generally for XP
x64 OSs.

If I'm wrong, please tell me.

I overlooked your note that this was going to be an x64 edition of XP Pro. To
that end, you only need to focus on updates that specifically list the x64
edition as an applicable platform.

Note.. if the characters "XP" and "x64" are in the update title.. as in
WindowsServer2003.WindowsXP-KB901105-v3-x64-ENU.exe'
^^^ ^^^

then you most definitely want to consider installing this update.

Specifically, though, KB901105 is a non-security critical update which affects
the system only if the "Intel High Definition" audio device is installed. This
would be identified as the "Hdaudbus.sys version 5.10.1.5012 driver file". If
that audio driver (hardware) does not exist on your x64 system, then the 'fix'
is irrelevant.

As for having /no/ intention of linking your 'musicputer' to the internet, or
intending to install firewalls and antivirus apps on it.. which also implies,
I assume, that you will not connect this machine to any kind of networing at
all - including a LAN, Wireless, or USB machine-to-machine communication, then
I would say focus on:

(a) Installing the latest service pack (SP2) for stability. (I think the x64
media has SP2 already built-in.)

(b) Installing any NON-security related Critical Updates (for stability).

(c) Installing any Optional updates (for their features).

and not losing a lot of sleep over Security updates -- unless the Security
updates also provide features or functionality directly related to your
purpose for the computer which is music.

If you're not going to be using Internet Explorer, or any IE-based
functionality in the applications installed on the computer, then the
installation of the Cumulative Security Updates is probably not a critical
issue for /this/ machine in its intended purpose.
