Do new updates obviate old updates?

I just reviewed my update-history and learned that a few "automatic updates"
failed to load, but subsequent updates have succeeded. Do the newer security
updates automatically INCLUDE older updates? If not, how do I re-load a
failed update?

Some updates are cumulative and include fixes in previous updates. Some
updates replace older ones.

Does Windows Update say you need any updates? If so, install them.

Go to the WindowsUpdate web page and let it do its thing. If nothing is then
listed - you're ok.
