Wait until all the kinks are fixed. This is an awful
update and should be downloaded after Microsoft has time
to fix all of the kinks. Alot of problems!
To bypass this update make sure your computer is not set
to download automatically. Download updates yourself and
DO NOT choose to download SP2.

Unless you can intelligently post a question regarding
any issues you had with SP2, please do not post bad
advice. It does not reflect the flawless installation experience
of SP2 already performed on millions of computers worldwide.

This is a Microsoft "help"newsgroup.
Why bother posting here if you cannot
ask an intelligent question that could
possibly lead to a solution to a problem
you have with the Windows XP operating
system or installing SP2? For starters:

Leo;
Wait for what?
The SP-2 available today is the same as SP-2 will be next year.
If all you do is wait, you are wasting time.
There will most likely be patches but SP-2 itself will still be the
same.
You should also research for possible hardware and software
compatibilities in your computer.
You should also make sure the computer is ready for SP-2:

Kinks fixed? What kinks? I am not sure what you are trying to say.
SP2 is not going to be reintroduced with all the kinks fixed. ( I take it
you are having a few problems) There will be updates (hot fixes) coming
along as real problems are isolated but you will have to have SP2 installed
to get these updates. Incapability problems with 3rd party software is not
MSoft's problem. If 3rd party venders want their software to work with SP2,
then they need to fix it themselves.
Msoft has tried to make the internet experence a little safer, but if
you chose not to install SP2, that is your problem. Your poorly protected
and poorly maintained computer is in its self a danger to the internet. A
properly maintained computer will have no problems with SP2, but the
spyware, adware and other junk on unprotected computers makes the install a
nightmare. This "junk" is not compatible with SP2, hence the major
problems.
I installed with the CD ordered from MSoft. The only major problem was
with Windows Media Player 10. I went back to WMP 9 and my problems cleared
right up.
If you don't know how to clean up your computer and get it ready for SP2
then just read back in the posts. You will find out the once you get it
clean you will have no major problems with SP2. The minor ones (if any)
will be easy to over come. You have all of the help you need to over come
the problems here.
All you have to do is ask for help and post the nature of your problem or
problems.
I am so tired of all of the "doom and gloom" about SP2. If your XP is
legal, the maintance is done right, the "junk" is cleaned up right, and you
know how to install software correctly the SP2 will be a breeze. And just
think, once it is installed correctly, the post will no longer be 100's a
day about SP2. And the constant "Do Not Install" post will just have to go
away.

Indeed.

And XP SP2 is a great security upgrade, if all hardware/3rd party software
conditions are met.
I would certainly enjoy buying it preinstalled on a new PC.

--Off Topic--
But some OEMs simply leave their customers out in the cold when it
comes to SPacks and patches issues - eg Medion (www.medion.com, Germany)
referred me to MS support, claiming on the phone that they "only supported
the configuration as supplied" - referring to a 2 y.o. pc with XP home....
I was stunned.

Fortunatelly MS gives free support on patches,
but overhere that means a 900-toll line:
http://www.microsoft.com/netherlands...2/default.aspx
"telefoonnummer - 0900 040 0070 - waar u van 9.00-22.00"

Is MS aware that many smaller European OEMs believe "support"
in their XP licencing/support agreement means "use your restore CD
and whipe everything" if *any installation fails?

I'm still struggling with a failed GDI update that prevents my C:
XP partition from booting...

Please pardon the rather lengthy post.

My SP2 experience has been/is flawless. I've installed it, without issue, on
6 systems.....two Dells, (a Dimension 2350 with an aftermarket sound card
and a second HD, and an Inspiron 1100 laptop), and four custom desktops. One
desktop has an Intel D865PERL mobo and Intel p4 3.0 cpu, the other three
desktops have Asus mobo's, (a p4p800dlx, p4 2.4 cpu....2 p4s800's, p4 2.4 &
2.0 cpu's). The desktops have a mixture of ATI/nVidia video cards with
different amounts of memory, along with different brands and speeds of
system
memory from 512mb to 1gb.

Three of the desktops use onboard audio, the other two employ different
makes of sound cards. All of the desktops, (5), have two optical drives and
two HD's. Four of the desktops have a cd and dvd burner along with an
internal Iomega 250 ZIP drive which require an add-in controller card.

Security programs are a mixture of Norton's System Works '02&'03, NIS
'02&'03, AVG, PcCillin', AntiVir, SyGate, AdAware and SpyBot. Other added
programs include MS Works Suite '02, Word '02, 2 or 3 different photo
editing programs, Nero 6, Roxio 6 and assorted games. There are quite a few
other commonly used programs and utilities installed as well. SP2 was
installed via WU twice, and installed from the 266mb IT download, (burned to
cd), the remaining four times.

My obvious point is, with all the varying system configurations, varying
hardware, security and commonly used programs and different SP2 installed
methods, one would think that there would have been a glitch somewhere among
these six installations of SP2, if SP2 was a buggy update. Am I just really
lucky? I don't think so.....I haven't won the lottery yet.

I did nothing in the way of preparation for SP2 other than make sure I had
the latest hardware drivers and perform my weekly routine of system
maintenance, (defrag, virus scan, spy/malware scan).

I am not a MS employee, nor am I a computer expert. I'm just an intermediate
user of 8yrs. or so who
has learned a lot by researching and reading information in NG's such as
this one. For those who are experiencing SP2 difficulties, I sympathize.
However, when you see/read a generalized blanket statement like the subject
of this post, I think the vast majority of you are wise enough to ignore the
"Chicken Little" mentality.

The over-simplification of the SP2 problems is embraced only by those not
seriously encumbered by same. Many of us have tried the recommended fixes
for SP2 XP upgrades advised by Microsoft, MVPs, and others without success
and are left with damaged machines and software. The point of view that
Windows XP should be permitted to mutate indiscriminantly through SP2
upgrades without regard for compatibility with pre-existing 3rd party
software that was specifically designed for Windows XP and is already
installed on countless machines around the world, is another way of saying
"purchase only Microsoft products because they will be the only ones
supported when the next upgrade comes along." No wonder Microsoft is the
target of contemporary litigation.

Dwight;
No operating system could promise what you suggest.
Microsoft has no control over what software is available.
Microsoft has even less control on what software is installed on a
computer.
If Microsoft more tightly controlled what software could be installed,
perhaps Microsoft could change the name to Apple.

Microsoft is a target largely for the same reason any large
corporation is a target...there is a potential for a lot of money.

Jupiter,

You are missing the point. It is not what Microsoft promises or controls
over software, but rather what it delivers. Misrepresentation of SP2 as a
security upgrade installation on unsuspecting users, while delivering a
product that incapacitates existing internet security software (Zone Labs,
McAfee) and countless other spyware/malware/virus/worm/malware/adware
software programs under Windows XP for which it was designed, is
reprehensible. Microsoft had an obligation to the public and 3rd party
developers to provide a reliable system. That system reliability has now
been breached by an upgrade making some previous software obsolete. These
are changes that should have more appropriately been effected through the
development of a new operating system - not the upgrade of an old operating
system. XP users and 3rd party developers stand to lose; Microsoft and help
desks stand to gain. Countless $$$$$$ will be lost insuring compatibility by
developers who have already bought into the XP OS.
