Do not install SP3 if you have a AMD processor OF ANY KIND! whether you have
bought the system from a shop, or built the system yourself. There is a
conflict between SP3 and the AMD processor! I dont know how, but it is
currently affecting millions of people around the world with many more
appearing every day.
Luckily for most, it is just the continual reboot cycle or the continual
BSOD's but for some (i being one of them), it has caused a more severe
problem. On the system i have just built, i had a brand new, straight out of
the box hard drive. I installed XP Pro SP2 with no problems and it was
running fine for roughly 1 week. Then i get the windows update message that
SP3 is available, so as any computer user who is worth his salt would do, i
read all the available information on SP3 to see what it would contain and
try and identify any risks with installing SP3. After not being able to find
anything i decided that it would be safe to install.......... however, upon
installing the SP, i started to get the continual reboot cycle, after 2
reboots, my computer then came up with the error STRAIGHT after the P.O.S.T
screen that there was no valid system disk replace disk and retry! I checked
my bios and that no longer detected the drive, i tried to access dos using a
dos boot disk and searching for the drive that way, all to no avail. I have
since contacted a computer repair company who told me that the boot sector
had been deleted, finding this a bit unusual, i took the HDD to another
computer repair company for a second opinion, only to be told the same thing!
Therefore meaning that SP3 on some AMD systems has the ability to delete the
boot sector. Which has cost me, not only in time wasted, but in money as i
have now had to buy another HDD to replace the one that is about now as much
use as a paper weight! although this does add some small novelty factor to
any computer desk, it serves to remind me that Microsoft OBVIOUSLY have not
tested the SP on a system containing an AMD processor, which is a bit naive
considering that a lot of people who cannot afford a intel processor go down
the AMD route, WHICH THEREFORE renders them liable for the costs of any parts
damaged by their software due to negligence on their part. So for all those
out there wanting to know if SP3 is ok to use, my advice to them is, if you
have an AMD system, DO NOT INSTALL SP3

Then why is it that SP3 runs perfectly on my AMD systems? Go scare your kid
brother, not us.

Hmmm. I installed it yesterday on my AMD Athlon 64 machine - no problem at
all.

NOTE: There is a possible issue with HP OEM installed XP machines with AMD
CPUs. See
http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jesp...ng-xp-sp3.aspx
if that is your situation.

Hi there,

Must be a miracle than

I am running multiple systems on an AMD CPU's with Sp3 installed and all
working just fine and one intel based sytem which runs fine too on Sp3.

You might want to check this however if you used an oem version for
installing win xp
install.http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jesp...ng-xp-sp3.aspx

And for your problem of disk loss: always backup before making critical
system changes as is advised as well by MS as well before installing SP3.

Best regards,
Michel Denie

You do not need to replace the HDD to correct a deleted boot sector. Either
your repair company is incompetent, or you misunderstood what they were saying.

If the boot sector was really deleted (likely indicative of malware) it should
still be possible (with the right tools) to recover the data partitions. If you
don't want to worry about the data, repartioning the disk and replacing the boot
sector is a trivial operation.

It is more likely that they said your boot sector was inaccessible, i.e., your
disk drive failed. This may have been set off by the high level of disk
activity associated with installing a service pack, but would have happened
anyway before very long.

Harry.
