Do I really need SP2?

Since my computer manufacturer, HP, will still offer support for SP1 after
Microsoft stops its supoort on 10/10/06, why should I upgrade to SP2 with all
of its inherent problems?

I haven't had any problems with it on three computers. Yes, you do need
it and all the subsequent updates.

SP2 is a critical update and has been available for over two years.
All computer manufacturer's now ship their PCs with SP2.
I have no idea what you mean by "all of its inherent problems".

HP will be in no position to offer support for SP1 after 10/10/06 since
Microsoft will not be releasing any security updates for SP1 after that
date. So HP will not be able to offer security updates for SP1 after then
either.

I do not know what you mean by "inherent problems" of SP2. Perhaps you are
misinformed.

I uninstalled it on one computer, and ended up needing to totally wipe the other computer. Those are my "inherent problems" with SP2. I'd call that fairly serious! Now that I'm back to SP1, my computers are running like champs! Oh, and it wasn't me alone that made that decision, a computer IT specialist advised me on this as well.

If your computer is new, and comes with SP2 already installed, there seem to
be no problems, though. Our laptop is ok.

Actually, on searching around here and seeing some of the other issues, I'm
wondering if the Norton/Symantec programs might have caused some of the
problems with SP2. I had Norton Systemworks installed on the two computers I
had problems with. Could that have caused a conflict with SP2? Now I'm using
AVG antivirus, because Systemworks got to be a big pain after 2001. If anyone
can allay my fears about this, maybe I'll reconsider SP2 (after I fully
backup each computer!).

Did you disable Norton before you did the SP2 download? I was told to do
that before I try upgrading. I am dreading it, but the pros outnumber the
cons on the issue of the upgrade to SP2.

Before you install it, disconnect any printers, cameras, etc. and do a
clean up and defrag.

Yes, I believe it's standard practice to disable anti-virus programs before
instslling new software. I don't think I disconnected any peripheral
equipment, though. I do lots of clean ups and at least check the frag status.
I will also do a full back up in case anything goes wrong. I will disable
AVG before starting on this.

So I did disable Norton, but still ran into major problems between
SystemWorks and SP2. Once I got rid of both, problems all disappeared. I'm
still nervous about installing SP2, as it was an IT specialist who told me to
remove it from all machines that didn't have it installed upon initial
purchase. Is there an expert here who can tell me what might have gone wrong?
I've also read on software reviews that other people had the same problem
with slowed down functions, crashing software, etc. Have those problems been
resolved?

You have both Norton and AVG running their virus scans on your computer?
