Hi, Monica.

Click the Send/Receive icon on the Home Ribbon. Then All newsgroups. Or
Update all.

And, as usual, you can add any of these to the QAT (Quick Action Toolbar).
I hope you've found the QAT; it's one of the most useful features of the
Ribbon UI.

Be sure that you've set the Synchronization settings for the newsgroup; it
may still be at the default, Don't synchronize.

...and ensure you right click the newsgroup account, select 'Properties' and
uncheck the item 'Include this account when checking for new messages'

Hi, Monica.

In an email to me, you asked, "What does the synchronization do?"

Winston can answer that question better than I can, but in general, it keeps
the messages on our hard drive synchronized with those on the news server.
We can choose to download every message the server still has, or only those
since our latest download from there. And we can choose to get just the
headers or the full message texts. Sometimes I choose "new", sometimes
"all", depending on how much traffic the NG has and how interested I am in
seeing everything in that NG.

In the process of syncing messages, WLM also syncs the Calendar - and who
knows what else. That why I defer to Winston on that question.

You email to me may have been due to a newbie mistake, even though you are
clearly not a newbie to WLM - except as a recent émigré still suffering
withdrawal from OE. ;^} As in OE, we have 3 Respond options in News:
Reply to group - almost always the right choice.
Reply - almost always the wrong choice because this goes only to the
previous Sender.
Reply all - almost certainly the wrong choice because it does BOTH.

The icons on the News and Mail Ribbons are different, but the differences
are easily overlooked. It MIGHT help to add the "Reply to group" icon to
the QAT, but I find it easier and less-confusing to just get used to
clicking the left-most of the Respond icons on either Ribbon.

So sorry! Yes, any email to you would have been an accident I'm
definitely not new to newsgroup but I AM new to WLM 2011. But, I've almost
got this thing looking as much like OE as I can (the layout). I'm sure I'll
get used to all the "ribbons" on top.

So, when I try to update newsgroup messages by clicking on the Send/Receive
down arrow and choosing "Update Newsgroups", I get the following:
You are not subscribed to any newsgroups from this news account. There is
nothing to synchronize."
Well I AM subscribed to a couple of newsgroups in the chosen news account.

When I choose "All Newsgroups" from the Send/Receive button, it checks for
NEWSGROUPS and then says "no new EMAIL MESSAGES", which I would assume is
not the same as newsgroup messages/posts.

Maybe I'm not understanding exactly how it's supposed to work
