When you say "windows update" you are referring to when you visit the
Windows Update web site using IE or are you really referring to
Automatic Update where the yellow icon appears on the Taskbar ?
Uncheck the box on Windows Update and choose to Hide it.
For AU, click on the yellow icon, uncheck the box next to it, click OK,
and put a check in the box " Do not notify me ... "
There was an error with the language package of IE7 and if you had hid
the update before, it began reappearing the last couple of days.
It should stay hidden now unless ... another 4-day holiday rolls around
and someone screws up again
