If you use "Add or Remove Programs" to remove an update, the system will
revert to its earlier unpatched state, which I guess is not what you
intended. So don't do that.
There are some third-party utilities that remove the ability to back out of
an update, and thereby enable the deletion of the back-up files and
directories, which can recover some space. The risk with this procedure is
that one day you might need to back out of an update for which you have
removed the back-up files.
