Under ‘Add/Remove Programs’ I have lots & lots of Windows Security updates,
XP updates, etc. installed automatically. These updates are taking up an
awful lot of room in my hard drive and I was wondering whether I could remove
them ? If it is possible to remove them, do I use the uninstall option in
Add/Remove Programs to do so or other utility ?

Yes, but deleting updates will expose your system to security risks.

If it is possible to upgrade your memory that would be the safer option.

If you use "Add or Remove Programs" to remove an update, the system will
revert to its earlier unpatched state, which I guess is not what you
intended. So don't do that.

There are some third-party utilities that remove the ability to back out of
an update, and thereby enable the deletion of the back-up files and
directories, which can recover some space. The risk with this procedure is
that one day you might need to back out of an update for which you have
removed the back-up files.

Hi there,

Why would you do so?

The prices for hard disk are incredibly low

Add another disk to your system: problem solved and your system will be
safer to use with all the patches intact.

Do not uninstall them as doing so would remove whatever security/patch
they provide.
But you can safely delete the uninstall files:
