Hi all,

We are going to introduce the new windows 2008 R2 DC to our windows 2003
32bit DCs with windows 2003 functional level. I need to run forestprep and
domainprep in the windows 2003 schema master.
Can I run the R2 64bit forestprep and domainprep on the windows 2003 32bit
domain controllers?

Thank you!

From a Windows 2008 R2 CD. In the Support\AdPrep folder there are 2 version
of the adprep..

Adprep.exe -- the 64x version
Adprep32.exe -- the 32x version.

Use the adprep32.exe on your 2003 32x domain controllers.

There should be both the 32 and 64 bits on the cd. Just so you realize (you
may already know) ALL R2 machines only run 64 bit so if you want to upgrade
any the current o/s has to be 64 bit.

Thank you for your help.

Currently, we have about 800 users and windows 2003 DIT file is about 120 MB.
We use RAID 1 for OS and RAID5 for log and DB.

Can we just use two disks RAID1 for everything?

Thank you.

You can if you feel comfortable with it. 120 MB is a rather small DIT so
after some time, most of the directory will be held in cache -- so disk
access should be pretty low. I wouldn't care much about the disks at
this point.

Florian

Thank you for your help.
so, What's the recommended RAID for domain controller?
RAID 1 for OS,
RAID 5 for data and log

I've seen RAID 5 recommended for data and log files, yeah. If you have
the disks already, I'd just go with that and configure it like this.

If you're planning a new server, though, with your DIT size, I probably
wouldn't go through all the overhead and simply buy two disks, one for
the OS, another for the DIT and its logs and go with that. As said, the
directory services stores parts of the DIT in its memory and accesses it
from there. Since your DIT is rather small, it *could* be placed
entirely in the DIT, so load on the disk shouldn't be much of an issue.

Cheers,
Florian

We run RAID 1 and both reside on the same partition. There isn't enough
activity to warrant the type of scenario you suggest and we are larger than
you. If this machine is a DC only then I wouldn't worry I would run RAID 1
or RAID and keep everything on the same partition.
