How do I search for a display name?

How do you seach for a username in Windows Live Messenger?

In other words, if you see someone's singles profile name on another site,
how do you quickly search that handle to see if they also use messenger under
that same moniker?

That's lame--you can do it with yahoo! Why not, I wonder?

Can you try to add someone to your friends list by simply entering a display
name?

The only way to add contacts is via Passport/Windows Live ID e-mail address.
