How do I stop Messenger starting each time I start Live Mail?

I have set messenger to: Automatically Run Messenger when I log on =
UNchecked

I have set live mail to: Automatically log on to Live Messenger = UNchecked

This has been an annoyance since Outlook Express and if there's no solution
I get rid of messenger all together

In Outlook Express, having the Contacts pane showing would start Messenger.
I don't see any comparable setting in Windows Live Mail 12.0.1606, and
Windows Live Messenger 8.5.1302.1018 does not start automatically when I
open WLM.

I have Messenger 8.5.1302.1018 installed - and for sure it starts up as
whenever Live Mail starts (I've just opened/closed both three times)

Like i say - it's an age old annoyance (it is specifically designed that
way) and i can only assume my set up is 'the norm'

I take it there is no solution/settings (on O/Express it was registry hack
only) than uninstall Live messenger and use something else (Yahoo, etc)

In OE I use the Manage Add-ons tool (e.g. in IE press Alt-T,A etc.)
to disable the extension but I never use Messenger.
Another thing I never use in OE (except when testing for others' incidents)
is Identity switching. Identity switching may be expose another
implementation quirk because I seem to recall that that caused
the Contacts pane to be switched on which in turn caused the Messenger
extension to be re-activated. However, that may really be caused by
Identity creation, not Identity switching, once the Contacts pane gets disabled
in a new identity.

Open up your third party Antivirus, Malware and/or Firewall program and check to see if it has an option that is toggled on to
monitor Messenger. If present disable it since many of these types will cause Messenger to be loaded regardless of Messenger or
Windows Live Mail settings.

I can only tell you how I have things configured. For Windows Live Mail
12.0.1606:

Tools | Options | General:

[ ] Automatically log on to Windows Live Messenger...unchecked.

For Windows Live Messenger 8.5.1302.1018:

Tools | Options | General:

[ ] Automatically run Windows Live Messener when I log on to
Windows...unchecked.

You might also check this setting in Windows Live Mail:

Tools | Options | Connection:

"Connecting to Windows Live services:

If you have a button labeled, "Stop signing in", click on it.

I don't recall if Windows Live Mail defaulted to logging in Windows Live
Messenger, or not. But I have it disabled, did enable it once, and
subsequently disabled it again. Currently, Windows Live Mail does not start
Windows Live Messenger, even though it does log in to the Windows Live
services.

I don't know of a registry hack. I haven't needed to explore that
possibility. Windows Live Messenger does not start unless I start it; even
when I start Windows Live Mail. So there is definitely something screwy with
your setup. I just don't know where to look.

BTW, I tamed that behavior in MS Outlook Express by closing the Contacts
pane; I never knew about that registry hack.

no it's not that - messenger is open/closing in sync with Live mail

It is an age old issue (prolly MSN back door) that could only be plugged
with registry hack

Tried that - but still doesn't stop messenger open/closing with Live Mail
