How Do I Stop Messenger From Starting With Hotmail?

I'm using IE8 and Windows XP. I would like to stop Windows Live Messenger
from auto starting when I sign in to Hotmail. I read about deleting the
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{F3A614DC-ABE0-11d2-A441-00C04F795683 key but it
didn't work, Messenger still popped up in my taskbar. I have a program I
got from a Microsoft MVP site called stopmessenger. It worked on IE6 and
Windows 2000. Should I try this again or is there another method? Thanks.

If I knew where I was I'd be there now.

Greetings Daffy,

The GUID changes with every version (with minor exceptions). However, deleting the key is a
bad idea and totally not necessary.

To disable Messenger integration in IE, open up Internet Explorer and choose the Tools menu.
Then choose Manage Add-ons.

Show the entries that run without permission and the specific entry you'll want to disable is
"Windows Live", which corresponds to the \Program Files\Windows Live\msgsc.14.0.8089.0726.dll
file and CLSID/Class ID is
{4F07F79F-087F-42CF-8B36-7A88D06088E9}. You may need to show the various columns to find the
exact one (there will be multiple 'Windows Live' entries). Double-click each entry for the
full information to show.

After you've found it, choose the button to Disable it and Messenger will no longer be
started by any Microsoft websites. Be aware however that if/when Messenger is updated, this
will be need to be done again (and will be a different file and CLSID).

One of these days I'll write up a utility that'll just take care of this automatically.

Tried disabling the entry as you suggested, but it had no effect.
Subsequently found there were total of four add-ins for Windows Live,
so I disabled them all. Still no effect.

Messenger starts when I open the Inbox of Hotmail, NOT when I simply
open the Hotmail site.

Any other suggestions how I can stop Messenger from loading when I
open the Hotmail Inbox?

It would be great if you could write a utility to disable the
automatic loading. Or make it an option within Messenger itself.

Thanks.

Hi,

This is certainly workable, but I'm not sure if this is a good mainstream
fix (will have to do further testing after the holiday) as other
applications make use of the Messenger ActiveX control beyond IE.

Greetings,

Given the different versions available, I think it is preferred to just to do them all -
certainly doesn't hurt to do so (and way easier than checking each).
