How do I stop WLM from launching and relaunching?

I've told WLM that I don't want it to open automatically when Windows starts.
And yet, the little guy is just determined to launch itself.

How do I stop if from popping up on the task bar and relaunching?

Thanks.

mlklein1,
Try running MSCONFIG.EXE. You didn't specify your operating system so try:
Hold down the WIN key (that's the one with microsoft flag on it) and tap the
R key. You will get the RUN dialog. Enter MSCONFIG.EXE in the "Open" box.
and hit the OK button.

Choose the "Startup" tab
You will see an entry for "Windows Live Messenger".
Click on the associated checkbox to clear the checkmark in the box.
Click on the OK button.
Close (click on the red X in the right-hand corner) this System
Configuration applet.
RESTART your computer!

Now don't panic, you can always go back to the Startup tab and recheck
Windows Live Messenger.

Greetings Karl,

MSConfig will not affect Messenger startup.

And even if you use something far superior (like autoruns) to do it, the next time it starts,
it will simply readd itself. You have to disable it within the application.

Greetings,

Just to be clear, this is more than just startup of Windows? As you said it relaunches
itself when you close it (and by that, I assume you're actually quitting the application, not
just hitting the X)?

Messenger will automatically start if another application specifically calls it -- so that
can be antivirus or other "internet security" software which has specific "messenger"
features, gadgets/widgets that use Messenger or even some Windows Live websites (like
Hotmail) if you use Internet Explorer.

Is any of these a possibility?
