How do I uninstall an active-x I installed by mistake?

Hello... I clicked on a link that said Microsoft Update (Vista). It popped up
an active-x that was asking if I would install? I inadvertently clicked the
"yes" install.

Now, ever since doing that, I can not Update Windows.

Is there an easy way to simply "uninstall this action"? I tried to "roll
back using system restore, but that still does not allow Window's Update to
work.

The error code is: 0x80245003.

Thanks.... ELS

Look under:

C:\WINXP\Downloaded Program Files

Right-click on suspected ActiveX control (Properties .... Date installed,
Version info), then select Remove when positive of file from Properties.

I would save it someplace first, then Remove, just in case it is the wrong
one and you need to put it back.
Hopefully, under the Version info, there is something to indicate Vista.

Hello Newscience:
Thanks for attempting to answer my question. I am sorry, but maybe it wasn't
an active-x file?

It was a pop up window, I clicked install, then relaized (like ooppss), that
wasn't "smart move".

Where else could I look for this "culprit" file installation?

Thanks...ELS

Sorry about the pathname ... I have Windows P installed under WINXP on my
system. That should have been C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files.

Check there, then if still wrong ... send reply.

***--->> FIXED AND UPDATES RUN CORRECTLY! <----***
Thanks to everyone! Thanks to: [Tom "Sky" King]
Here's where I found the solution that worked for me: (copy and pasted):

Hi;

Try this:

On the Start/Run line enter: net stop wuauserv

Open Explorer and Delete these folders:
...\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\SelfUpdate
...\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\WebSetup
...\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\WuRedir
...\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\AuthCabs
...\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore
...\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download

On the Start/Run line enter: net start wuauserv

Restart the computer, being sure you log in with an account that has
full Administrator privileges. Then open one instance of IE and give
the Windows Update site another try.

This is quite similar to what Pat Walters posted, but includes the other
WU related folders that may pertain.

Great result - where did you find that - I don't think it was in the link I
gave you.

It's easier to just delete the SoftwareDistribution folder.
