The most common problems for people having trouble sending/receiving
email are:

1. You are using the wrong mail server settings. Check your ISP's
website ( or that of your web hosting company if your mail host is other
than your ISP) for the correct mail server settings for POP (Incoming)
and SMTP (outgoing). Most ISP's will also have a "walkthrough" to show
you how to set up mail using popular email clients such as Outlook
Express, Eudora, and Thunderbird. If they don't have instructions for
Windows Mail yet, use the ones for Outlook Express.

2. You have "outgoing mail server requires authentication" checked when
it does not. Or vice versa.

3. You are trying to send mail through an SMTP server that isn't your
regular ISP; i.e., you are trying to send mail through AT&T's server
when your ISP is Comcast. Some ISP's care about this and some don't.

4. Your user name and/or password are incorrect. Yes, you do have a user
name and password for your email. It probably has just been a long time
since you set this up (or someone else set it up for you) and you've
forgotten. Look through your ISP-related documentation or contact your
ISP. They will be able to tell you your user name and assign you a new
password.

5. Your antivirus is set to scan emails and/or is one that causes
problems with your operating system (such as McAfee in Vista). Turn this
option off since it doesn't provide you any extra protection and tends
to cause problems.

Does an entry not show up when you click the Start Orb>All Programs? Try
typing "Windows Mail" (without the quotes into the Search box. Or use
the built-in Vista Help and use "Windows Mail" as the search term.

The system comes up with a screen having blanks for "User Name" and
"Password". I've filled in everything related to "Windows XP". But to no
avail. Everytime it waits a few seconds, and redisplays the same screen.
Please help!

There are a couple of places where a password prompt might come up.
1) When you log on. I assume you're past that point.

2) If this prompt comes up when you open Windows Mail, I'm guessing it needs
for you to set up Mail with an existing email account you already have. If
that's where we are, that's so complicated, I'm not even going to begin to
try to explain how that's done.

Byt, rereading your message, I'm wondering if you're talking about logging
into the computer at startup. Is that what we're talking about?

The prompt is coming up when I open "Windows Mail". I am also guessing that
it wants me to set up mail with an existing email account. But what if I
wanted to set up a new account (I don't). How would I do that?

The User Name and password it is asking for must somehow be related to what
I am using in XP. But I've tried everything!

You haven't tried everything. You haven't read the information I gave
you about setting up your mail in my first post. You haven't gone to
your ISP's website and looked at the tutorial for setting up your email
client. You haven't looked at Windows Help or the link I gave you.

The username and password have nothing to do with the operating system.
They are for your email account on your ISP's mail server. Again, do as
suggested and go to your ISP's website to see how to set up your mail.
