When I go to IE6, click on tools, click on windows update, I get a
page whose address is

http://update.microsoft.com/microsof....aspx?ln=en-us

It says

Checking if your computer has the latest version of Windows updating
software for use with the website…

It then says

The website uses ActiveX controls to determine which version of the
software your computer is running. If you see an ActiveX warning, make
sure the control is digitally signed by Microsoft before installing it
or allowing it to run.

At that point it stops.
There is nothing about AcxtiveX warning..
It used to go through a search and tell me what updates I needed.

It doesn't do that any more.

Can anyone help me?????

Thanks,

Herb

Suggestion 1:-
Clearing Temporary Internet files, cookies and history in Internet Explorer
Tools>Internet Options>General
You'll see Delete Cookies, Delete files, Delete History
NB: "Delete all offline content", will delete all files needed to browse the websites
offline.
Reboot and try Windows Update again.

Suggestion 2:-
The below links assist you in checking your system for parasites:-
http://aumha.org/a/noads.htm
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/tshoot.html
Please note that some malware may kill the internet connection when it is removed,
the program on the link below will enable you to regain the internet connection.
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Spyware Programs links:-
www.lavasoftusa.com Ad-Aware
www.security.kolla.de Spybot

Suggestion 3:-
Make sure you haven't got anything blocking Windows Update like Nortons, Zonealarm
etc
Also make sure you don't have a Web Accelerator working in the background such as
NetZerio, HiSpeed, Speedband etc.

If you still have the same problem, can you post back with what antivirus program & security / firewall program (if any) this pc runs?
If needed, try turning off your AV program before going to Windows Update.

Hello Herbert,
Turn on your ZA firewall. And for time being, when visiting W U, keep NAV off.
You are reaching W U website, something is stuck in the remaining steps for Windows Update.

If you have vers 6/SP2 of IE6, pay attention to information bar at the top of IE window. And turn on the presence of IE's Status Bar so you can see progress of steps at W U.
On IE menu bar, select View, and check Status Bar to have it on.

In Internet Explorer browser > main menu /Tools/Internet Options >

Security Tab/ click on green icon Trusted Sites/click Sites button.

Click (to clear) "Require server verification (https for all sites in this zone" to **clear** (un-check) the selection.
(A check mark, if present, on this item needs to be Removed.)

In the "Add this Web site to the zone:" field, add these entries to list of "Trusted Sites" --

type
http://www.download.windowsupdate.com (click Add)

http://update.microsoft.com

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

http://download.windowsupdate.com

Click OK.

Make sure you are not *disabling* any scripting capabilities in I.E.

Recheck ActiveX acceptance. Instead of disable, try using "prompt".

In IE browser, Tools, Internet Options, select Security Tab. Click on Trusted Sites.
Look for Custom Level button. Click it. Review selections.
