Do you need to be logged in for Automatic Updates to run?

Ok - you have to be logged in as an administrator to change settings
for auto updates but does a user (any user) have to be logged in for
the updates to download and install?

Can you schedule to download & install at 10:00 for example, switch
the pc on at 09:45 and leave it at the login screen and have the
updates download & install with the PC still at the login screen?

AFAIK some account, any account, must be logged in. Until then, the support
files needed aren't loaded, including 'net connections, which is what really
needs to be running, if you think about it. And you can't run them without
signing on.
You could always manually download them.
