How do you Restore Advanced Volume Controls?

I swear, Windows XP is so infuriating sometimes; one day a feature is there,
one day it is not, leaving me to either request help or use system restore,
which I don't want to do for such a simple problem.
The volume control on the taskbar. Why are my "Advanced Controls" grayed
out? One day they were there, one day they were not. I have a Compaq
Presario 1911X 3500+ with XP latest and greatest, reinstalled the sound
driver three times, including the Realtek High-definition audio, which works
fine (the mixer/equalizer works fine), but the advanced controls under the
Windows volume control is robbing my sound of definition. How do I get the
advanced controls back without ten days worth of reinstalling, rebooting,
etc? I know they were there before.
My recovery disc is a separate hard drive. As I mentioned, reinstalling
the sound driver does not reinstall the advanced volume controls. This is a
new computer, they should not be unavailable. I simply cannot stand the
sound without any bass to it, other speakers won't make a difference unless
the output has the bass boosted from the operating system. Any help would be
appreciated. Please reply to (since Hotmail
started deleting my folders and messages without warning, I quit using
Hotmail; so what if I don't log in every thirty days, that doesn't give them
permission to delete my stuff without telling me). Thank you. MM.
