Hi,

If you're referring to the sidebar, then right click the icon in the system
tray and choose properties. Uncheck the box to start when Windows starts.

You are probably referring to the DELL DOCK,
a proprietary dock that only some Dell systems have.

If this is the case, then you have to go the the docks settings and see
there if there is an option to turn it off.

This can be installed only on a dell system so many people wont know what
you are talking about... I have seen it, but I don't have a dell now.

I am referring to the Dock that by default is at the top of the screen
It shows several popular applications, in a tray, such as email, office
etc. It is to be used in lieu of the traditional icons on the desktop

I'm guessing that you have a Dell and this is the Dell Dock. I've only run
into one person that wanted to keep it. If I'm right about what it is,
then:

1. If you think you'll never want to use it, go to Control Panel>Programs &
Features and uninstall it. You can always get it again from Dell's website.

2. If you think you might want it and therefore would prefer not to
uninstall it, you can set it to not start with Windows from the Dell Dock
preferences.

Yes, Malke, I am referring to the Dell Dock, I could not think of th
name for this "waste of Desktop space" I just purchsed my computer les
than a month ago, and am new to Vista. I am, therefore, a bit reluctan
to to uninstall it, until I am sure that I truly do not want to clutte
my desktop. I will try your suggestion and get back to you. I than
everyone that has replied so far

edit

I have tried your suggestion Malke and, it works, thank you so much
