1. Boot with a rescue CD such as a Bart's PE or Knoppix (Linux) and retrieve
data that wasn't backed up. Copy it to an external hard drive or, if it
will fit, to a USB thumb drive.
2. Run a diagnostic utility from the hard drive mftr. (or use Seagate's
SeaTools For DOS) to make sure the hard drive isn't failing. If the
diagnostic shows any physical errors, replace the hard drive.
3. Try running Chkdsk from outside the operating system using your Vista
installation DVD. This link has pictures:

If you don't have a real Vista DVD, then you can use this:
Windows Vista Recovery Disc Download:

4. If the hard drive is physically healthy and doing #3 doesn't help, then
you can try running Vista's version of a Repair Install:
Repair A Vista Installation Using The Upgrade Option Of The Vista DVD -

And if that doesn't work, you will need to do a clean install of Vista (or
return your computer to factory condition if it is an OEM machine). There
is no way for me to know why you got the corruption. Malware, power
outages, and physical problems can all be factors.
