Does the Hard Drive access ever stop in Vista?

I have applied all of the usual ways to stop disk thrashing. However, the
disk is still be accessed almost exactly once per second.

This would not bother me, but the light on this HP computer is right under
the left side of the screen...and anything flashing in visual range is
annoying.

XP does not have this regular access behavior and goes dark for long periods
on a similar laptop.

Comments or solutions appreciated...

I think this regular polling is something to do with the automatic detection
of CD/DVD insertion.

The only thing is, I'm not sure how to fix it.

Is your CD/DVD drive on the same IDE interface as your hard disk? I always
keep them on separate interfaces and have never had this problem. But
something is sitting there in the back of my mind - perhaps I've read about
this problem in a computer mag, or something.

Also, I think you can switch off Autoplay-on-insertion altogether. Perhaps
this will stop the polling.

The hled light flashing regularly has to do with the advancement o
PreFetch first seen with XP and later the SuperFetch process of keepin
the most used programs loaded in low profile into the memory. The ide
was to see a reduction of time when going to start up a partiall
preloaded application

One of the side benefits was including some maintainence services lik
the disk defragment tool. After a long period of time a Vista volum
will see 0% fragmentation while older versions may tend to see over 10
if the tool was never set on a periodic schedule

What interface is your hard drive connected to? I would suggest SATAI
if it is not already..

Certainly true for some Dell desktops but then it's not visible all the
time so the once a second blip is not a problem.

On a custom built system here the blue led reflects off of the door o
the cabinet section of the desk the main case is in. That sees a doubl
blip every few seconds on a system with more then hard drive.

Every so often at night you might think a flashing blue light? What'
going on? when you just happen to catch the reflection off the side o
you.

On the previous build with only one the same was still there too. Yo
have to remember that Windows has background processes accessing th
drive while you are busy with something else

Duct tape is certainly a workaround or try moving the computer case
itself. A better approach is to investigate why the hard disk is
thrashing. How much free memory do you have, both in RAM and on the hard
disk?

Vista newbie. My HDD light also flickers without ceasing, at roughly 1Hz. I
do run Indexing, but this also happened when I had Indexing turned off.

RAM (>1Gig) and HDD space (26 GB) are not a problem. I too would appreciate
knowing why this is happening.
