what does the [ mean ??

Hello,

Using Vista message rules to try to sort spam, I read an article which
suggested typing '[SPAM' into the search box (specific words). What does the
[ bracket do ?

Actually it's probably recommended that it be [SPAM]

The brackets are just for show, as is SPAM.

As a way to mark which it considers junk, many "Spam" filters have the
option to precede the message with the word spam surrounded by brackets,
so when listed you see

good email
[spam] junk email

In some cases this is the only way messages can be marked.
