does the MSRT check for key loggers too?

I assume it does since a key logger would probably be classified as
malicious. I am just making sure my computer is well protected against key
loggers. I also run Symantec Endpoint Protection version 11.

I notice that based on the MSRT logs found in Windows dir\debug\mrt.log that
it seems like the quick scan runs each month based on start and finish times.
If you download and manually run the tool then you have an option for a full
scan that takes much longer. So the quick scan is probably good enough
unless you have reason to be suspicious that the computer may be at risk in
which case you do the manual full scan?

Your question really has nothing to do with Windows Update.

The MSRT is not an anti-virus application or an anti-spyware application.
It scans for the presence of a set number of Bad Guys and Bad Guys it looks
for is updated at least once a month. See the Release Information section
of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/890830.
