How does one disable Live Messenger when checking Hotmail?

After I start Internet Explorer, go to Hotmail, and click on Inbox, Windows
Live Messenger starts and I would like to prevent this from happening...how
do you do it?

I've gone to WLM>Options>Sign In and made sure everything was disabled.
I've gone to IE>Manage Add-Ons and disabled Windows Live Sign-in Helper and
Windows Messenger. Neither of these approaches will prevent WLM from
starting.

Thank you,

- Dave

Greetings Dave,

As SuNcO has already indicated, this is due to the integration feature in Hotmail which calls
Messenger and if it's not starting, it starts it up.

To disable the integration, open up Internet Explorer and choose the Tools menu. Then if
you're using IE7, choose Manage Add-ons and Enable or Disable Add-ons. If you're using IE8,
just choose Manage Add-ons.

Show the entries that run without requiring permission and the specific entry you'll want to
disable is "Windows Live", which corresponds to the \Program Files\Windows
Live\msgsc.14.0.8064.0206.dll file and CLSID/Class ID is
{E1771B7F-98BE-407F-BA67-AA16ADA5D0C5}. You may need to show the various columns to find the
exact one (there will be multiple 'Windows Live' entries). In IE8 you can also double-click
each entry for the full information to show.

After you've found it, choose the button to Disable it and Messenger will no longer be
started by any Microsoft websites. Be aware however that if/when Messenger is updated, this
will be need to be done again (and will be a different file and CLSID).

Thanks Jonathan, I should have mentioned that I use IE6. Is there a way to
disable this integration with this older version? I have already tried the
"Manage Add-ons" options menu item. There are only 2 add-ons listed from
Microsoft: "Windows Live Sign-in Helper" and "Windows Messenger". I've
disabled both. There is not an add-on listed that has a file name following
the "msgsc.*.dll" format you mentioned.

I did look in the registry to see if there was a way to disable it and was
able to find the "msmsgs.exe" that's starting under the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Extensions\{FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683}. Can I disable it
using a change somewhere at this level?

Thanks again,

- Dave

In Hotmail hover over your name in the upper right corner (or if nothing appears, click on it), then you get the option to Sign Out Of Messenger. That should fix it.
So far it hasn't logged me back in automatically anymore.
Good luck!
