Does Service Pack 2 Kill Broadband Web Access?

Broadband bandwidth for Web access went straight to nothing after
installation of SP2. It shot back up to normal after removal of SP2.
Turning off the XP firewall made no difference. Could not find any likely
configuration weirdness, but I am sure I did not look far enough. Broadband
itself remained functioning in other Internet areas; you could ping several
Web sites, for instance, and get travel times compatible with broadband.
Finally just reinstalled. Now have a build of XP that is update-free. I
want the updates, especially Windows Defender, but I don't even want to put
on any hotfixes until I know what SP2 did to my Web service and how to fix it
without a reinstallation. Sticking with Norton and various freebies for now.
Please help.

Did you uninstall Norton prior to installing SP2?? - Norton is often the
cause of such update woes

There's no reason for SP2 to affect broadband bandwidth on web access.

Millions of broadband users are running SP2. In fact, it is dangerous to go
online with anything less than SP2 installed - you will probably get hacked
by a worm within 20 minutes.

If you had a third-party firewall before you applied SP2, you will need to
uninstall it beforehand.

You also need to uninstall Norton before doing the SP2 update.

If your ISP requires any web proxy settings, you might need to check those.

I don't remember if I uninstalled Norton or even had it installed at the
time. However, updating went just fine when I tried it with Norton
uninstalled. Not a single update got caught in a snag, and the bandwith
remained strong after SP2. Updating did seem to stall, however, when I shut
off the broadband connection itself after downloading, during installation.
The next try, I left it on, assuming that housekeeping went on between the
installer and home base; that time it worked fine. Thanks much.

Writing this again in case you didn't get it. The compose screen just went
blank and stayed blank when I pressed Post. Just wanted to thank you for
your advice. You sure were right abot the 20 minutes, by the way; the av,
Avast, said it was Sasser. Incidentally, found that you probably should
leave the broadband connection enabled during update installation, not just
downloading. I shut it off during install to cut down on the chance of
attacks during that stage, and the install seemed to stall. Perhaps
housekeeping goes on between installer and home base, or something. Thanks
again.

Glad you've got it up and running OK.
Well Done!
