I would create one manually. I took it a step further and did an image
of my drive before the installation, just in case. You'll find my imager
software in this thread:

And I meant to also ask....should I have all my scanners/printers/external
HDDs attached and running so as to have drivers all 'running' as well
.....???

It creates one OK but when my update was catastrophic (it wouldn't even see
my Nvidia graphics card) the restore point didn't work either, I had to
restore to a previous one. So make your own restore point before you start.

I created one manually "just in case" and after SP1 installed there
was only one restore point - the one created automatically - all
others, including the one I created, had gone!

So no need to waste time creating one manually.
