Does SP2 keep a log file

Having all kinds of fun trying to update from SP1a to SP2. The install never
quite goes through. The update window comes up and says "Installation
Initializing..." and the larger box says "Windows XP SP2". Several minutes
later a two or three line message comes on but disappears so rapidly I can't
begin to read it. Then, the update window explains that SP2 installation was
not completed. If I could get a look at the error message (if that's what it
is) I might be able to tell what to do. So, the question is: Does Windows
update keep a log file of the error messages. I don't want to see the
installation history - that isn't helpful. I need to see a log file of the
errors, if one is even created on the local disk. Thanks all!
