Does uninstalling SBS 2003 from the server migrate it to Server 20

We have an SQL Server instance that will not migrate, so reformatting the
hard drive is not an option. The SQL that is installed was not part of the
SBS installation. We would like to demote this server to a Windows 2003
Server by uninstalling Small Business Server 2003 from the system. Will this
work? Please help!

No, you must run SBS servers per the restrictions.

Thanks for the reply. The installed version of SBS 2003 was an upgrade from
2000, can I purchase and install just Windows Server 2008 without
reformatting the hard drives?

You can install a new Windows Server instance on the same partition without
reformating, if you have the free space to do so. You'll probably need about
40GB free space on the C: partition to do so.

SQL will still need to be re-installed on the new 2008 instance though, so
what would your gain by doing this?

Inplace upgrading from SBS2003 to Server 2008 (32bit) is not a supported
option, TTBOMK.

No, sorry - you can't do that. You will need to buy a copy of Windows Server
& start over. I don't know what "won't migrate" means, but I'd be pretty
amazed if *nobody* could get the app reinstalled & migrate the database to a
new server.
