How does Vista determine the 'System Manufacturer'?

This has puzzled me since I first loaded Vista...

A jump to Control Panel\System and Maintenance\System gives the user
a chance to 'View basic information about your computer' and it tells
you (amongst other things) who your computer was manufactured by.
Mine was manufacturer by Dell it says - with a Dell logo to support
it, which is news to me as I put the box together myself with NO Dell
parts!

Where is this slanderous info stored that I might change it and insert
my own logo?

Hil

Search the Registry for DELL.

There's some part of the story we're not getting here, a homebuilt system
using a proper license and DVD cannot end up with the Dell logo on it.

Anything is possible. One can thank the Distributed Management Task
Fource for introducting the Desktop Management Interface (DMI). A lot
of the information that manufacturers put into their products, such as
an EPROM or bios chip, ends up being recorded in the DMI. Who knows?
The production of this particular motherboard might be an over-run for
a batch made for Dell, and from which the fabricator has released to
other distributors for sale until, perhaps, their own branding or as
"white box" products.

If you have the program to do it, it would be possible to change the
DMI entries that are stored in the motherboard.

Thanks for the link which I'll attempt to put into use when My head is
clear.

Regedit found 'Dell' references in the LM\HARDWARE\ DESCRIPTION
\SystemBiosVersion section and ..\..\ACPI section indicating that the
mobo or BIOS was as Ghostrider suggested here. Search found Dell logo
files too.

I'm not greatly bothered by this - some would be fuming - it's a tool
not an ego trip. I leave that to my bike!

Thanks, all, for the pointers,

Hil

I used to have to 'tattoo' replacement motherboards to show the HP Logo &
allow the installation by the HP Restore disks.
No Tattoo, no installing from the CDs.
The new motherboards ate 'tattooed' at the factory.
I'm sure Dell has a similiar system.
I wonder if you got a surplus board originally intended for shipment to
Dell.
On my XP systems, it's a registry entry that determines what displays in the
Manufacturer section.
My home built systems show "For Support, Go Find GrandPa!" LOL
