Does Vista work with older software?

I ran into a woman tonight at Office Depot and we were talking, and she
said that she regrets upgrading to Vista because it crashes with a lot of
her XP software.

Is this true?

I've been thinking of getting a new computer with Vista instead of XP, but
now I'm rethinking that.

I have bought my daughter a laptop with Vista installed and when she sends me
files for printing or information on my computer installed with XP I cannot
print it or open it. Is there a solution to this problem?

Maybe and maybe not, but I have found time and time again it's about who is
stetting behind the wheel and is doing the driving with Vista. Apparently,
the woman did do her homework, and maybe she can't drive either.

You may not be ready for Vista, at this time.

You have to be getting some kind of message. What's the message?

Hi Sara

I think it largely depends on not necessarily how old (within reason
the software is, but more specifically, what programs are we referrin
to? For instance, my version of Adobe Acrobat Professional 8.0 require
me to install it by right clicking on the setup file (.exe) and checkin
the 'Compatibility' option and it solved the incompatibility issue

I have used Vista Ultimate x32 & x64 since they were released o
January 30, 2007 and although in the beginning there were severa
software/driver issue challenges, I didn't find it too difficult to fin
suitable solutions to fix the problems

Sarah, can you give me an idea of your computers configuration and wha
software you need to use

With Kindest Regard

This is an entirely subjective argument, as it depends on how old the
software is, what it does, and how you use your computer.

For example, it's a given that any system utility software written for
XP or older (such as "Norton Systemworks" or "System Mechanic") will not
function correctly on Vista.

Application software like Microsoft Office will work unchanged. Office
2003 works like a charm even on Vista x64. Some of my clients use Office
2000 in Vista x86 (32-Bit).

Games are the real thorny issue, as they usually have greater demands
for system resources than anything. I'm running Diablo II without any
problems. And Diablo II was relased in 2000, even before XP!

Then there is also the matter of 16 Bit vs. 32-Bit code. If you choose
Vista x86, you should be able to run these older 16-Bit (Windows 3.x,
Windows 9x) applications. If you use Vista x64
(_which_I_highly_recommened,_btw_), then you cannot. Microsoft removed
all support for 16-bit applications from Vista x64.

There are just too many factors involved that determine whether a given
application or game will work with Vista or not. Your best chance for
success, is to categorise which applications you use everyday, and then
to find out from the developers whether they are compatible with Vista
or not.

What are the specifics of her failures? Windows Vista has a fairly helpful
Problem Reports and Solutions Center control panel (a nicer front end to the
data set previously found in the Event View in Windows XP) - if she goes to
View Problem History, what are the details for a few of those crashes?

Many vendors have updates to their software that fix issues that were
causing problems.

That's kind of a vague complaint, so no more than vague advice is possible.

Yes, there are programs that work fine under Windows XP but do not under
Vista. Many of them are older programs that would work fine if they also
were upgraded to the latest version. Many others are games, which are often
problematic no matter what operating system you run. And yes, there are
some that won't run and can't be upgraded and you're stuck there.

Since you know what programs you have and want to run in Vista, you need to
find out if each of them will work in Vista or not, and if not, then what
corrective action may be possible.

Sure, but not every older program. My change over went smooth with few
problems. There were a few small glitches but they were all resolved by
updating the programs in question using free easy on-line updating. I
currently have only one program that is still having a problem (As-U-Type)
and I have been told they are working on it. Even that program does work,
just not totally.

Frankly it was a smoother transition than any since moving up to TOS
1.4.
