Does WLM do HD webcaming?

I'm currently using the latest version of WLM with a Logitech Quickcam
Communicate STX I've had for several years, and was wondering if I would get
a better experience using the newer Logitech Webcam Pro 9000 that is supposed
to be HD. Does WLM even do webcaming in HD?

Greetings,

Depends what you mean by "HD". The highest Messenger can go is 640x480 in a video call, full
screen mode. I don't own one personally, but I'd expect the framerate to be better on the
9000 at this res.

However, Skype does true "HD" now, and there's a whole batch of new HD cameras coming out to
support it. So probably best to hold off:

By HD I'm referring to the typically accepted HD standard of 720P or 1080P
which seems to be developing. That Logitech Webcam Pro 9000 is being
marketed as a HD webcam, but as far as I know, skype is the only video
messaging service that supposedly can take advantage of it. Of course, if I
have it with my pc set-up the other party should get good video quality of
me, but if they have a pc/webcam/internet speed that isn't as good, I'm still
not gonna see a great video of them anyway.

By "HD" I'm referring to the somewhat accepted standard of 720P or 1080P. As
a side note, any idea when WLM 2010 is coming out? And any groundbreaking
new features expected like multiple video chat capability?

Hi,

Re: 2010, I'll be the last to know.

Wouldn't expect any new video stuff, I don't believe it's a priority.

You can share and view multiple webcams in Messenger today (the key is to use the 'Webcam'
functions and not the Video Call), but not multiple audio.

Ahem, Microsoft has been producing the Lifecam Cinema HD for a bit.
Messenger has not caught up with it yet though and still produces a 4:3
frame instead of the desired 16:9.

Hi,

Yes I know, but the camera is basically just another camera given the lack of software
support and unless you have a fairly new PC, you can forget about using the HD "modes" for
anything. I admit I've yet to see one myself, but I have read reviews and heard from others.
Given it's just another camera basically unless you hack Skype to even make it work there,
it's not even really worth mentioning specifically as an "HD camera".

These new Skype cameras do their processing on the camera itself so they can actually be used
in the mainstream, netbooks, etc. Only limit is will end up being bandwidth.

I've got one and it works fine. Not just another camera, and not just for
video calls. It's much better than the VX series on light, color, sharpness
and sound quality. It is indeed HD and produces 720p HD video.
