Does WU modify these files?

I just ran an AV check on my system and it picked up changes to
kernel32.dll, user32.dll, shell32.dll, and ntoskrnl.exe. Wondering if this
is normal after WU or if I should be worried.

Some of these files "may" be updated, but it just depends on the specific update. It could well be that your AV is overly protective.
Do look at your WindowsUpdate.log file (located in the \Windows folder or the \WINNT folder, as appropriate).

Look at what your last 2 or so updates were.

What AV are you running? and which version of Windows?
