I'm just a computer user. I don't wanna be a geek. Got other things
to do.

I go to Windows Update, and the damn thing just sits there -- frozen.
After a few minutes, I get an error message: 0x8DDD0004.

I've looked at the messages on this board and they seem horribly
complicated. Turn off this and that services; unregister this and
that, but only if X & Y are not on the system, unless the system is A
or B. Reregister some other things. And then if the computer won't
work at all ...

What's a poor simple-minded user to do? I just wantt ot update. Do I
have to learn programming and quantum mechanics first?

Doesn't anybody, somebody, please, anybody -- have a fix to download
so that I can go to Windows Update and see the damn updates?

I'm using XP Home.

Hello Northshore Chicagoland. I remember you.
You need someone to walk you through it.

Have you tried the free online assisted support from Microsoft?
It's only free for WU issues, but that's what you've got:

Hi, but I'm afraid you've mistaken me for another poster. Never been
to Chicago.

I'm afraid of on-line support. MS might start snooping around my
computer, and I don't want that.

Lots of other people are stuck -- can't get past the update page.
Isn't there a simple fix somewhere?

Oh. I thought you were A. Harmon who frazzled us in the OE
newsgroup during the great mshtml debacle. Sure you aren't her?
The simple fix is to do a clean installation of Windows. Tedious,
but it works - you a souped up computer out of it, too.

Otherwise, you have to deal with complications, which is best
done with knowlegeable help - like what I suggested.

Are you running Windows Update on an administrator account? If you're not
you should be Check to see if the Automatic Updates service is still
running:
Click Start · Control Panel, then select Performance and Maintenance and
click System. Select the Automatic Updates tab and make sure that Automatic
is selected and then click OK.

Now check to see if Automatic Updates is service is running:
Click Start · Run and type "services.msc" without the quotes and press
enter. The Services window should pop-up. Under the name column find
Automatic Updates. If it does not appear there skip over the remainder of
this paragraph, if it is double-click on it; the properties dialog should
open up. Make sure it says "Automatic" in the Startup type box and the
Service status says "Started".

If you've made any changes to this point restart your computer and see if
Windows Update is working yet. If Windows Update continues to display errors
continue on.

Register the DLL files:
Click Start · Run and type "cmd" without the quotes and press enter. Type in
the following and press return after each line:
REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wuapi.dll
REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wuaueng.dll
REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\atl.dll
REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wucltui.dll
REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wups.dll
Enter "exit" and press enter.

Check and see if Windows Update is working, if Windows Update continues not
to work please attach your WindowsUpdate.log file. To gather your
WindowsUpdate.log file select Start · Run, and then type "%windir%" and
press enter. The WindowsUpdate.log file will be located in this folder.
