doesn't "Outlook" come with Vista?

Got a call from a friend who just purchased a new Toshiba laptop which came
with Vista, don't know what flavor, and he can't find Outlook on it
anywhere. Came with the Office suite, Word is there as is Excel,
Powerpoint, OneNote, etc. but no Outlook.

googled for it and it seems from what I could find in a few minutes that
he's going to have to "buy" Outlook for Vista, is that correct, or is it
just too well hidden?

That sounds like the Student version of Office, to me. It's pretty strange
that a laptop would come with that.

No software comes with Vista or any other o/s
The PC supplier may choose to supply trial or other versions, if the
purchaser pays for them
There is no Outlook for Vista, there is Outlook 2007 and various Office 2007
versions

Comes with window mail and window live mail can be downloaded. Both are
basicly upgraded to outlook and outlook express.

It sounds like Office 2007 Home and Student. It may be only a trial: if so,
your friend will need to buy a licence for it. Office 2007 Home and Student
does not include Outlook.

If your friend is looking for Outlook Express, he should use Windows Mail.

Outlook has been replaced by Microsoft Mail.

If you want an email client that doubles as a newsreader there are
many that run circles around Outlook. I've used Agent for years. It
might be a bit too complicated for casual users. None the less there
are many such applications in all prices ranges, a few decent ones are
free. To find some Google email clients and/or newsreaders.

Your question is confussing.

Vista is the OS and does not come with Outlook. Outlook is the software
inside Microsoft Office family, not vista.

However, like windows xp come with outlook express, vista come with a new
version of outlook express which is now called Windows Mail.

Many of the computer vendors are bundling a "trial copy" of "Office for Home and Students".
This copy has Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, but does not include Outlook.
Be aware that this "trial copy" will quit work in 60 (or 90) days and then you have to buy a license to keep using it. The license usually costs more than you can buy the program for a your local store.
Note: the Office software is not part of Windows and never has been.

It depends on which version of MS Office he got, some have it, some don't,.
But Vista (nor any previous Windows) does not include Outlook.
Vista replaced Outlook Express with Windows Mail.
You can download Windows Live Mail, but it seems to be a resource hog.
I don't see that Windows Live is any better than reading your mail in a
browser window, and a browser seems to have less overhead.
Like anything else, that is MY opinion, some people love it, I think it
stinks.
