Domain Controllers not reporting to WSUS

I have two problems:
1. My domain controllers are not reporting back to WSUS yet; I've forced
replication and it's been 2 days. They are getting the appropriate group
policy as shown through gpresult. Do they need to be restarted? I feel like
I'm missing something easy here...
2.On the home page of my WSUS server I get the stop message telling me that
the 'selfupdate service' is not running. The problem is that the service IS
running and I have to restart the 'update service' for this message to go
away and to regain communication with my clients. After I restart the service
WSUS will communicate for about ten-15 minutes and then it goes back to the
same message. Please advise.
