Don't have Service Pack 2 but now can't update

When I go to Windows Update it says...

"Get the latest updates available for your computer's operating system,
software, and hardware. Windows Update scans your computer to see what
updates are required and provides you with a list of updates tailored just
for you.".

So I select the Express Install.

Now before I did this I alreay had automatic updates on. When I try to
install it I get this message:

Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP
5.1 (KB842773)

I am not interested in getting the service pack 2 however I do need to be
able to install critical updates and now because I don't have the "latest
version" I can't install anything.

Does anyone know how to solve this issue

There are no further updates for WinXPSP1 - either install SP2 or accept
that you're dead-in-the-water.

Hi Budsmommy,

The message that you're receiving isn't due to your not having the "latest
version" as in SP2, but is due to your needing to d/load and install "Update
for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1
(KB842773)" in order to use the latest version of Windows Update (i.e.,
version 5 of Windows Update). Once you have d/loaded and installed Update
for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1
(KB842773), and have restarted your computer, go to Windows Update, click on
Express Install, and it should then list any further critical updates.

Regards,

Hi

This is absolutely not correct.

There is full (mainstream) support for Windows XP SP1 up to
17-Sep-2006.

You can't install IE6SP2 without the rest of SP2.
There are/will be no updates beyond Security updates for IE6SP1 outside SP2
Most people use their PC for surfing, a little photo manipulation, and
games.
Games are rapidly going to require SP2 (it's simpler than programming for
both SP1 and SP2)

No matter what MS may say, this amounts to effectively no updates for SP1.

Hi

Still, security updates (sic!) are updates, so it is very easy for
people to misunderstand when you state that there will be no further
updates to WinXP/IE SP1 without stating that you mean functional
updates and not security updates...
