If no one knows the password, then presumably you'll have to reinstall the
operating system etc.
Use the recovery disks/installation disks or seek further assistance on how
to reinstall the laptop to original state from Compac?

Ask the friend for the password.

If this doesn't produce the correct code, you can always do a full (clean)
reinstall of Windows (assuming the friend provided all the Windows /
original restore disks etc (or assuming the restore partition is still in
place on the Compaq drive if that was the method of restoring the system if
needed) as you don't know what's been on that PC in terms of malicious
software, viruses, malware, spyware and other junk. It's best to do the
reinstall on 2nd-hand computers anyway.

If you start the restore/reinstall procedure then you won't need the
password - but I suppose the system will eventually ask, you for one to be
made up when the system boots for the first time - it will probably create a
admin user account and ask you to put in (your own) password - make sure
your brother records this so it is not forgotten.

This will allow you to create a Boot CD that will give you the option to
reset the password :-)

Cripes! Lets be serious here.

You either stole the computer or you purchased a stolen computer.

Take it to your local police department. They may be able to contact the
rightful owners who **MAY** supply you with a password.

But I would guess that the password would not include a "get out of jail
free" card.

Why people even begin to assist someone like you is well beyond my
comprehension.

Linux-based password cracking utilities abound on the Internet, freely
available to anyone who can use Google.

However, with second-hand computers, especially if acquired from
strangers but perhaps even if acquired from a family member, your
brother's wisest course of action would probably be to format the hard
drives and start fresh. He doesn't want to get in trouble because the
original owner may have filled the hard drive with kiddie porn, or have
problems because the original owner downloaded/installed viruses or
other malware.

Simply boot from the Vista installation DVD. You'll be offered
the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.) If the computer came
with a factory-installed OEM version of Vista, simply follow the
computer manufacturer's Recovery instructions.
