After cleaning up a big mess with Excel I discovered that the copy of office
2000 Pro was only chortcuts. After cleaning up the mess was told to download
updates, but I only have shortcuts not files, can I download updates to
shortcuts? Feeling very frustrated and stupid! Also this is the 5th time I
posted this question as "there was a problem and the question was not
submitted!

Hi PA Bear once again! Yes the link you showed was my post. Do you think I
should just go to Microsoft and find free downloads? Do you know if the
information I have in Excel now will transfer? Thanks!

Are those Office 2000 "shortcuts" functional? In other words, can you open
and use, e.g., Excel 2000?

Have you tried checking for and install available updates at Office Update?

I've got a sneaking suspicion that your machine may not be free of all
infections, yet.

Did you manage to get WinXP SP3 installed? Is Automatic Updates enabled?
Can you reach Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com), scan for
& install any critical security updates offered?

Hi PA Bear! Yes the shortcuts are functional. Yes got XP SP# instalaled and
the slowness resoslved, but I think that the problem with Office 2000 was a
trickle down problem from that update. Yes auto update is on and yes I can
go to Microsoft updates and did check for any critical updates, there was not
any listed. I did check for updates to the Office 2000 but didn't know if it
would "Update" the shortcuts that I have. I'm trying to be very cautious and
don't want to update something that is only shortcuts and not actual files.
Right now I have the functional shortcuts and it all my information is there.
Ready to do income taxes and all my info was in Excel and really freaked out
then it didn't come up. Spent yesterday from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm CT either
on the 1-800 # or on-line chat with Microsft "fixxing the Office 2000 and
getting Excel back, and the only problem was with Excel, I could get in to
Word and anything else fine. Strange!

If Microsoft Update (vs. Windows Update) is your default update source, any
available updates for Office 2000 will be offered by Automatic Updates (AU).
If AU offers you none, you're OK.

NB: Mainstream Support for Office 2000 ended on 30 June 2004; Extended
Support ends 14 July 2009.

About those shortcut icons: If functionality isn't affected, don't worry
about them. If functionality is affected, either do a Repair or reinstall
Office 2000 (in which case you'd need to reinstall all Office 2000 updates,
too).

If you need further assistance regarding Office itself, please begin a new
thread in the appropriate Office newsgroup.
