I downloaded the newest WGA update some weeks ago. I don't want it,
because of the concern that one day it's going to wrongly lock me out
of my own computer. I'd heard of Vista doing just that to some early
users.

I downloaded it but never installed it. So it's always there in the
tray, taking up space. How do I get rid of it?

If you have a legit copy, you have nothing to worry about. If you were to
upgrade to Vista, it will be replaced and I've not heard of any specific
problems with it in Vista.
