dos window

I've set up a couple of shortcuts on their desktop to DOS applications.

Each time they click, there is a vista warning msg presented. How do I get
rid of that warning msg?

Oh, and the taskbar is now THREE rows high and doesn't appear to want to
shrink back to one row. There are lots of icons in the system tray. What's
going on there?

Hi,

The applications probably cannot be virtualized, so they are trying to write
to either system folders or the Program Files folder. Either way, they have
to run elevated to do so, thus the prompt. You could get rid of it by
disabling UAC, but that is not recommended.

Lots of icons means you have lots of stuff in the startup group. Check
Windows Defender and msconfig for allowed programs in the startup group.

What is the warning message. Is it by any chance that you need to run the
app as admin?

You should be able to drag the task bar to the desired size unless you've
right clicked it like I always do and put an address bar in it to save time
(that doubles as a run box).

You can exert some control over icons by right clicking the Start
button>properties or right clicking the notification area>properties, and on
the notification area tab>check Hide inactive icons and hig the "customize"
button.

No need to run as admin, though I did try that.

No problem virtualizing the apps.

Here is a clue: One app is on the local drive (no warning msg) the other
app is on a LAN drive. The one on the networked computer is the one giving
the waring msg. The msg is something about no digital signature.

I already have UAC turned off.

Problem with the taskbar was that one of the groups (I forget what they are
really called) got moved up so the forced the taskbar to be three rows tall.
After moving that grouping (which was empty) down, I could then shrink the
taskbar.

What I want to do with the shortcut is make that (#&$@ arrow much smaller,
aka power toys for XP.
