On a Vista machine Is there a way to reset the action of double-clicking on
a .jpg to mimic the behavior of right-clicking the file and selecting
preview?

Check the value of the 'default' key at

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jpegfile\shell

It should show '(value not set)'., in the right pane. If not then modify the
default key in the right pane to remove whatever's there.

If that sounds a bit too tricky then post back and I'll attach a .reg file
that does the same.

That was set correct but a branch lower in the registry key I noted that the
command to open was pointing to the WPG in \program files\ that doesn't work
very well instead of the WGP in \program files (x86)\ that does so I made
that tweak.

Now photos on C:\* open lightning-fast but photos on a network share are
still slower than molasses to open.
