I had the exact same problem however it just resolved itself today. I think
that this solution needs reviewed to potentially stamp out a bug in this
update. So, I would appreciate it if you could read closely.
I am using XP Pro, English version... had that patch offered on Windows
Update and Automatic Updates. It failed with that previously mentioned code.
I wanted to see what I could do to make it work or "go away" without
specifically removing it.
I have all versions of the .Net Framework installed. I installed most but
not all optional patches for this machine. Today I installed a few more
optional patches.
Windows XP Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 1 (KB929300) --
Successful Install
Windows XP Root Certificates Update -- Successful Install
Windows XP Update for .NET Framework 3.0: x86 (KB932471) -- Successful
Install
Windows XP Update for Windows XP (KB934238) -- Falied Install
I did a scan for Windows Updates again (Custom scan) so that I could retry
to install KB934238. This time that update didn't show. I believe that the
update was showing because it was required that I install one of the 3 items
that I installed above. Without one of those installed, Windows Update was
pretty darn sure that I needed 934238.
As a sidenote, I have seen a couple of computers not being able to install
an automatic update and that update was 934238. So, I think this problem is
kinda widespread... and thus might relate to one of the three patches above.
On my machine, I have not installed the following patches. The rest I have
installed for my version of Windows.
Microsoft Base Smart Card Cryptographic Service Provider Package: x86
(KB909520)
Driver update for RADEON 9600 SERIES - Secondary
Driver update for NVIDIA(R) nForce(TM) Audio
Silicon Image - Other Hardware - Silicon Image SiI 0680 ATA-133 Medley Raid
Controller
Hope this post helps!
