The theme that Vista uses has nothing to do with which version of
DirectX is being used. DirectX10 is a standard component of Windows
Vista regardless of which screncard you are using, and cannot be
"downgraded" to DX 9c. Whether you can actually use the new features of
DX10 or not depends on how new your graphics card is. Otherwise, most
programs written for XP will use the DX9 components that already exist
as part of DX10.

To Enable Aero:

- Right-Click an empty area of your desktop, then selct Personalize.
- Click "Window Color and Appearance".
- Click "Open Classic appearance..."
- Select "Windows Aero" in the color scheme list and click OK. If
"Windows Aero" does not show in the list, then you're using a version
if Windows Vista that does not support Aero, usually Vista Starter or
Vista Home Basic

When you say "with no luck", I'm guessing that you have Windows Aero
available, but it cannot be used? Are you receiving any error messages
when you attempt to turn it on?

But updating a graphics card driver shouldn't turn off Aero where the
previous driver worked. We are both missing some critical factor here
that is turning off Aero, such as a newly installed program perhaps.
I've seen some DivX utilities that can do this.

DirectX 10 was not installed with the new drivers. DX10 is a standard
component of any Windows Vista installation, regardless of which
graphics card driver you are using.

Try running the System Configuration tool (press <WINKEY>+<R>, type
MSCONFIG and press <ENTER>. ) Disable any unecessary startup items and
then try re-enabling Aero after a restart. If Aero can be turned on as
shown in an earlier post without problems, then one or more of the
startup items you have disabled is the problem child.

okay, as far as graphics card compatibilty goes.... i dont think it is the
hardware vendors or hardware in this case as , like a lot of products are,
dx10 was rushed into production..... dont get me wrong, some of the features
it offers seems well worth the wait, but anywho.... i have to agree with
everyone wanting to downgrade. my fiance went to install and older game,
prison tycoon 3, and couldnt because it very plainly stated that it couldnt
start because the file d3d9_25.dll was not found. or something similiar to
that.

i strongly suggest either creating a patch microsoft, or creating a
downgrading utility so that we can go back to our 9.0c......without having to
unistall vista...

Downgrading isn't necessary. DX10 is COMPLETELY separate from DX9.

Just download and install the latest DX9c. It wont effect DX10, and all your
DX9 games will run.
