I don't want Vista but I need a new laptop, and they all seem to come with it
installed. Can anyone tell me: how easy is it to get rid of vista and install
my trusty old XP instead?

Hi,

Provided there are drivers available from the laptop manufacturer for XP
(some do not have these, you have to check first), removing Vista and
installing XP is fairly simple. All you need do is boot with the XP CD and
start setup. At the point where you choose the installation location, remove
the volume that contains Vista, then create a new one from the resulting
free space. Format it (quick is fine) and proceed. One thing to keep in mind
is that if the drive is sata, you may need to load a driver via floppy (XP
setup cannot load one from any other type of device as Vista can). If the
system doesn't have one - not uncommon in laptops - you will need to see if
it supports a USB floppy device as a bootable item.

Many manufacturers will supply a laptop without an OS installed if you ask,
you'll just need to obtain your own copy of XP.

Any reason you don't want Windows Vista?

Can you disconnect from the anti-vista dogma long enough to realize millions
of people know how to run a PC...and that Vista is really, really stable.

*Some* laptops (but not all) will support XP. The issue is whether its
manufacturers has XP drivers for all its hardware. Some companies
(Dell, for example) will supply at least some of their laptops with a
choice between XP and Vista. Some don't, but come with Vista, and also
have XP drivers available if you want to install it yourself. If
drivers are not available, you can't install XP successfully.

Despite your first sentence saying "I don't want Vista," I think you
are making a mistake. Vista is fine, as long as you get an adequate
hardware configuration for it, and that's what I personally would
want.

I bought a Dell Inspiron 1501 with Vista preloaded, and a Dell OEM XP
install CD from Amazon Marketplace for $35, with Product Key and everything.
They have this model at WalMart for $5-600. It was very easy on this
computer to wipe the hard disk and install XP. The device drivers are the
only touchy spot. On some, not all, laptops device drivers only exist for
Vista. On the model Dell that I have the drivers work under either OS.

Easy, easy, easy.

Do your research first and determine that you are purchasing a laptop for
which XP device drivers will be available. The best place to find this out
is the manufacturer's web site. I got an E-Mail from Amazon the other day
saying that XP was still available for sale. If you don't need product
support then you can install a copy of XP OEM from any of a number of
vendors. Some of the manufacturers have a system downgrade option
available. You can purchase the computer with XP, or you can get one off
the shelves and put XP on it yourself.

Cheers,

Earle

Keep in mind that the major problem is between the chair and keyboard.

Having said that - it interesting that many "swear" by Win XP - XP appeared
on the scene in 2001 - check "microsoft.public.windowsxp.general" and note
that the number of problem posts exceeds that of Vista general newsgroup.
